Gaming Laptops

Heyur Dudes

Hoping to god I've put this in the right forum as it's main focus IS on Pc gaming =]

So I figure it's about time to get rid of the hunk of junk I'm on now
and who better to ask for help than you guys!
I know you all enjoi giving advice on this sorta thing so here goes:

at the minute I'm running on a custom built PC, the specs are something like:

CPU: AMD Athlon x64 Dualcore 2.2Ghz
RAM: 2GB
Graphics: Nvidia Gforce 7900GTO (256mb)

Basically I'm gettin sick of having to point my cooling fan at my graphics card everytime I wanna play fallout 3 so I was thinking about getting a new desktop when I realized it would be easier for me to get a laptop what with me going to Uni and everything

Sooooo I need some shopping advice...I've done alot of lookin around and aside from selling my mother to buy an alienware M17x I'm at abit of a loss =D

1) What is your budget?
£400 (£450 tops)

2) What size notebook would you prefer?
15" - 17" screen

3) Where will you buying this notebook?
Online or instore

4) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like?
Not fussed, Acer and Dell often have good looking models

5) What are the primary tasks will you be performing with this notebook?
Gaming

6) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places, leaving it on your desk or both?
Both

7) Will you be playing games on it; if so, which games or types of games?
all kinds so deffinately needs to be able to cope with high spec games
no online games though

8) How many hours of battery life do you need?
as much as poss

9) Would you prefer to see the notebooks you're considering before purchasing it or buying a notebook on-line without seeing it is OK?
ok to buy online but the look of the model is important

10) What OS do you prefer? Windows (XP or Vista), Mac OS, Linux, etc.
I'd prefer XP as I have a general rule not to touch ANYTHING by microsoft until 3 years after it's release... though I will settle for vista for the right price

11) what screen resolutions would you prefer?
I'm currently on 1440 x 900 I think and then use my HDTV for watchin movies
god knows what the resolution of that thing is...would prefer a HD compatible laptop anyways

12) Do you want a glossy/reflective screen or a matte/non-glossy screen?
no idea xD
need your advice here I guess

13) Are the notebook's looks and stylishness important to you?
Very I'd say hahaha, Dell often have customizable covers etc though so long as it looks stylish, not black, square and bulky

14) When are you buying this laptop and how long do you want this laptop to last?
the reason I;m not having one custom built is so that it lasts longer ha!
I need a reliable machine as mines on its last legs after a year

15) How much hard drive space do you want; 80GB to 500GB? Do you want a SSD drive?
I have a 1TB external hard drive for file storage, just need the space for installed games and music, 150GB-1TB

16) Do you need an optical drive? If yes, a CDRW/DVD-ROM, DVD Burner or Blu-Ray drive?
DVD-R/CD-RW
maybe bluray though thats deffinately not a necessity

I know alot of you will turn around and say I need to upgrade my budget which is something I've come to expect now though I have found 1 laptop that would be acceptable in most aspects and even better in others:
ACER Aspire 5920g
I've seen this for £410 inc 4GB RAM, 2.2Ghz x2 procesing power and a halfway decent graphics card too, certainly it will cope with my games which is all I really need

I'd like to point out that my 4 main needs here are CPU speed, RAM, Graphics and style

I'm looking forward to suggestions =]

Re: Gaming Laptops

Finding a decent gaming laptop for 400GBP will be difficult. Usually you don't start seeing game-capable rigs until about 600GBP.

I've had good experiences with the Asus G50VT laptops, they have decent CPUs and a GeForce 9800M GT graphics card, but they start at US$950 and go up, and I'm not sure if you can get them in the UK.

Re: Gaming Laptops

For $450 (british pound) I can make you a low end but upgradable desktop gaming machine. There is no chance of getting a laptop machine for that price.
