Choppy cursor
I started having some problems with my computer about 2 weeks ago. First the computer was freezing every few seconds for about one second. I wasn't able to type properly and the cursor would jump around. I tried formatting the hard drive and it didn't do anything. I tried replacing the memory with the same stype, just different sizes. This too did not work. I tried testing the memory with windows diagnostic tool for about 4 hours and it found no errors. I then found that the issue would also occur in the BIOS as well.
I eventually got it fixed by removing the heat sink and fan and placing it back on. But the problem came back a couple of days later. I tried taking the heat sink and fan off again and putting them back on but this sort of changed the problem. Now I can type just fine, but the cursor is just very choppy and it's hard to control where to put the cursor. I also have to hold down the mouse button to make sure that the cursor actually "clicks" (especially when clikcing on a link in IE) because sometimes it won't if I just press like normal. I tried cleaning up the thermal grease on the cpu and the gpu and put some new grease on. But this did nothing to help. Does anyone have any tips on this? Thanks |

Re: Choppy cursor
Please post your system specs, including full details about the mouse and PSU.
Have you tried using another mouse, and have you tested your mouse on another computer? Is the mouse USB or PS2? If USB, is it connected directly or via a hub? Have you tried another USB port? Is the mouse wireless? If so, is it part of a wireless mouse/keyboard combo? Are there any red or yellow flags in Device Manager? Are there any CPU spikes in the Task Manager's Performance tab when the cursor freezes? What are the temperatures and voltages in BIOS?

Re: Choppy cursor
I'm using a laptop made by ABS (ww.abs.com) model Z2, running Win XP. The mouse that I use is just the touch pad. I just plugged in a usb optical mouse and it fixed the problem. But I'd like to get this thing fixed so I don't have to use a usb mouse. I also checked device manager and there is a yellow exclamation mark that says SM Bus Controller. I'm not sure what that is though.
The motherboard is made by Asus (model Z96JS) and I've looked at their download site, but I don't know which one I need to download. My internet is pretty slow and I didn't want to download every file to find out which one it was. |

Re: Choppy cursor
The System Bus Controller monitors the motherboard's temperature sensors, voltages, battery, etc.
Reinstall the chipset drivers from your motherboard CD or download and install the latest version from your motherboard manufacturer's website. Go to http://www.driverstock.com/ASUS-Z96J...058/index.html and install the Touchpad driver, or click the 'Scan Computer For Driver Updates' link. I'll move this thread over to the Laptops forum as it appears to be related to the touchpad. CPU spikes, temps/volts?

Re: Choppy cursor
I'm not sure which are the chipset drivers, but I did manage to get rid of the SM Bus Controller warning in device manager. But I'm still having the same issue. I've also reinstalled the touchpad drivers.

Re: Choppy cursor
From what I've been reading in online reviews, the touchpad on the Asus Z96JS is very poor quality. If your chipset drivers are up to date and there are now no flags in Device Manager, it's not a software or driver problem, so have it checked out by your local PC store to see if it can be fixed.
