Toshiba Satellite A-100 CD drive

I purchased a new CD/DVD drive for my four year old Toshiba Satellite A-100 as the old one went crazy and did not want to work. Unfortunately I bought a Toshiba Portege A100 DVD/ CD-RW Combo Drive which is not exactly what I had before hopping that it will work anyway. Unfortunately I got surprised because it does not recognize the CD/DVD drive at all :/.. It seems to work and the light is flashing so I believe that it is not broken. I just plugged it in as that’s the way I was told to do it. Do I have to download drivers to make it run? Will it work on my laptop or is it a “newer” CD drive which will not cooperate with my laptop? I would appreciate any help. Thx
