OS: Dell e1505 vista 32 bit home premium 2gb ram DDR2 667mhz intel core 2 duo 2.0ghz 320gb hhd

dvd burner problem

ok i have a e1505 and i think the dvd burner is going out. i bought it in spring of 07 and everytime i copy a disk or even burn one the drive disapears. i have tried taking the drive out and sliding it back in all the way and does not help. its been an issue from begining. at first all i had to do is slide it out and back in like dell told me and fixed problem for a while. recently problem is back. now i though ok maybe a driver issue. was up to date so then i thought it was the regestry which i know i have had issue with in the past due to virus. so i formated my hard drive with a clean install of vista. did not make a difference. now i think it's the connections. if that is so is it the ones in the burner or the ones in the laptop. i need to know if buying a new one will solve the issue. i am sick of dell laptops. all the problems i have had with vista and dell makes me want to get a mac pro next time.
