[SOLVED] Toshiba M4O problem
My satellite M40 laptop wouldt turn on when i got home today. When i pressed power button, led lights would come on, laptop would make clicking sound and would turn off. I tryed taking battery out, same thing. At one point it did turned on, got as far as Welcome screen and then turned off.
I left it alone for an hour, then tryed it again and now it works fine, it's been running for half an hour. Fan seems to work. Can this be a software problem? What test can i do to determine what happened? |

Re: Toshiba M4O problem
Hi,
Lets see if this helps. Unplug the AC Adapter Remove the battery Press and hold down the power button for 30 seconds. Reinstall the battery and the AC Adapter. See if the computer will boot up. Also besure the vents are free of dust. Use a can of compressed air and blow out the vents. Bill |

Re: Toshiba M4O problem
Does the computer post the Toshiba screen?
Are you able to enter the BIOS? Does the BIOS detect the harddrive? If so, chances are the clicking noise you hear maybe the harddrive (as Ken1569 stated). Go to this link and try to run the Harddrive utility: Hard Drive Diagnostic Utilities Bill Last edited by BCCOMP; 09-05-2009 at 07:23 AM. |

Re: Toshiba M4O problem
Hi,
I am Running out of ideas here. If the harddrive was bad (it still could be) you should still get to the Toshiba screen or BIOS (POST) If you are not getting any screen it could be a MoBo issue or Memory issue. It could also be a monitor issue. Have you tried to connect it to an external monitor and see if you get a POST Reseat your memory modules. If you have more than one module install one at a time and see if you get a POST. (Be sure you remove the AC adapter and Battery before you remove/install the memory modules) If none of the above gets you a POST try removing the CD-Rom and Harddrive and any other external devices and see if you get a POST. Re: Toshiba M4O problem
They should be listed in the instructions.
Normally just a small phillips head and flat head screw driver. ESD Strap Maybe a small pair of needle nose pliers. I must warn you: If you never worked on a Laptop before you are up for a challenge. There are several small parts that can be broken easily. If you brake them you may have issues finding replacement parts. If you have never done this before, I would suggest you take it to a professional. Bill |

Re: Toshiba M4O problem
It actually sounds like the memory chip, without the memory chip, computer won't start. if it's blown...it'll attempt to start...but won't get far...HD could be a chain effect of blowing out as well. Shoot there could be alot of problems...processor....everything...lol

Re: Toshiba M4O problem
You have a point TheRandomTech, but I thought I covered this in my previous post (post 10). The only thing I did not think about or asked was how many Memory sticks in this computer.
How many sticks are installed forenplayer? Did you remove any to see what happens? Bill |

Re: Toshiba M4O problem
Yea I had a customer who's desktop had the similar problem. I replaced the memory chip (found out on of the little connector pieces was fried....-black instead of gold-) so I replaced that...the computer tempted to start up. It would run in dos mode and everything, just wouldn't start up in windows...so I replaced the HD and it worked perfectly fine.
My thinking of what happened....her ram fried while her computer was on...it didn't shut the computer off and ended up damaging her HD...burning that as well. Might be foren's problem as well. But...what do I know...I'm just a network admin. lol. I'll let bccomp do his duty. He knows way more than I will. (for now =]) |

Re: Toshiba M4O problem
If you have the board out of the laptop then there should be a part number on the board. You should go by that part number.
Is this board on Ebay new? Whats the price? Bill |
