Laptop damage?

I have a Dell Inspiron 1545-012b running vista 32bit

Will my laptop shutdown due to overheating before it reaches the point where damage could occur?

The reason I ask is, I was in my room the other day and I wanted to go downstairs. Stupidly, I closed the laptop, put it in my laptop case, left the zipper open and walked downstairs into the kitchen. Got a glass of water then walked into my basement. I then sat down, pulled my laptop out of the case and continued working.

Then, I remembered - Laptops should not be ON inside of your case because it could damage it. Do you think my laptop would have shutdown before it did any damage? What are the chances my laptop is damaged now? I am worried because I don't have a lot of money and I need it for college this year. I always try and keep my things in mint condition and I don't want my laptop to be damaged! Please, someone give me some detailed info for an answer to my question.

Thanks,
TechSavvy (or not so techsavvy i guess )

Re: Laptop damage?

in which power plan are you in vista at that time,

generally it depends on power plans some power plans in vista have automatic shutdown after some time and when lid is closed!

Regarding damage when the lid was closed. It completely depends on the heat it generated during it was in the case closed.I guess you didn't left it in for so much time, so it should be all right. no need to worry!

Re: Laptop damage?

To answer your question, yes, computers in the last 7-10 years will shutdown to prevent processor damage from overheating, they are supposed to anyway, doesn't always happen.

But, your computer will not shutdown due to the hard drive overheating, which is usually the first thing to go due to heat problems.

As long as it wasn't left in the case for that long, you're probably fine.

I am using the "Dell Reccomended" Power plan. Not sure which that one would compare to in "non- dell" laptops
