Compaq CQ50 problem

I've been having this crazy problem with my computer and it's driving me nuts. It keeps making a sound like a device is connecting to it (like it makes when you connect a usb device). It keeps causing my laptop to freeze for a about a minute or 2. It happens very randomly and sometimes will make the noise 6 times in a row. Please help, it's driving me NUTS!!!

Oh, and I'm not sure but I think it may have happened as a result of my son playing games online. I can't think of the website he plays games at but this started happening one day after he got off the computer, little rat !

ETA: a couple of times the computer has shut itself down because of this and I've seen the message error message ** DBT_DEVNODES_CHANGED

Re: Compaq CQ50 problem

Remove any external devices connected to your computer (including its internet connection). If symptoms still persist, check Device manager for any device that may need drivers or UNKNOWN status.

Post back what you find out.

Re: Compaq CQ50 problem

I don't have any external devices attached, wireless internet. I checked the device manager and everything looked ok. Although when the computer makes that noise the list of devices in the device manger closes and then opens again. My son plays on miniclips.com and addictinggames.com so I'm praying that he didn't click yes to something he shouldn't. He swears that he didn't. Any clues as to what else this could be????

THANK YOU!!!

Re: Compaq CQ50 problem

If devices in DEVICE MANAGER are good, I suggest you run your antivirus or something like eset NOD32 online scanner (please Google for address).

If he pressed YES to something that he shouldn't, let's hope the online scanner can find it.
