Dell Inspiron 6400 screen

About 3 days ago I was using my laptop when there was a loud pop/cracking noise which came form me adjusting my screen angle because I had moved. I didn't notice until I turned my laptop off and went to put it away 10 minutes after adjusting the angle, that the case around the screen is coming apart. Just to see if any of you can help me I've taken some out of focus pictures.

Re: Dell Inspiron 6400 screen

hi and welcome to the forum it looks like you put to much pressure on the hinge and popped the casing, you should take it in for repair unless you plan to do it yourself then you need to find the service manual to help you, also you may have bust the hinge

Re: Dell Inspiron 6400 screen

I was thinking it was the hinge because when I took the screen off from the main section the hinge just fell out but the other side stayed in place. Seeing as I've never taken a pc or laptop for repair as I do all of them myself would you know how much it may be to get it repaired in a shop?

Thanks again

Re: Dell Inspiron 6400 screen

I have now opened up the screen to have a look at the hinge. This is what I've found:

http://i26.tinypic.com/2ut20xv.jpg
In case you can't tell that's the head of the screw that has broken off.

Compare that to the other side:

How would I go about removing the screw/the mounting bit ?

Thnaks

Re: Dell Inspiron 6400 screen

well, you could try getting ahold of screw extractor set. Look like reverse drill bits basically.

But, I have a dell on my bench right now with the same problem, Its also possible to just replace the LCD Back panel (the metal part the LCD is sitting in, which should have those mounts on it) its pretty cheap, was $30 from dell.

Thanks I think there may be a screw extractor kit somewhere around the house. How did you get dell to ship you one because I can't find one in their online store on Dell.co.uk

Thanks again

Re: Dell Inspiron 6400 screen

you have to talk to them directly, thier support or sales reps should be able to find exactly the part you need and ship it to you. They don't list repair parts on thier website.
