Toshiba Laptop Display & Boot Problems
Toshiba P205D-S7438 w/updated BIOS 1.4 encountered a weird display/boot problem. Laptop boots and screen displays characters but reports \windows\system32\winload.exe (0xc000000e) error which I am not sure is related or a 2nd issue. Load Vista 32 disk to attempt repair, screen shows loading then screen remains black and only mouse pointer remains. Tried MiniPE Live Disk and after initial load screen also remains black. Don't believe this is driver related as Live Disk does not depend on Vista drivers. Ran Eurosoft PC-Check 6.05 and it failed LCD TEST but ran other hardware diagnostics and all Video tests passed. Connecting external monitor delivers equal results. Please help... Thanks...

Re: Toshiba Laptop Display & Boot Problems
Can you boot into BIOS settings (at least)? If yes, is screen OK? If not, is it the same if you use an external monitor?

Re: Toshiba Laptop Display & Boot Problems
Thanks for your response. As stated in the post the display works when booting and I can log into the BIOS, also connecting an external monitor yields same results.

Re: Toshiba Laptop Display & Boot Problems
So you mean you can boot into BIOS settings with your LCD and external monitor (both does not turn black or blank)? If so, does that mean problem only happens when booting from HDD (Windows Vista) and from CD/DVD drive?
Have you tried using a linux live CD? If not, I suggest you try Ubuntu or Knoppix and see if both screens behave like before (screen blanks out leaving only cursor on screen). Check also brightness settings in Windows and in BIOS settings (if you have them).

Re: Toshiba Laptop Display & Boot Problems
did you run a hard drive diag on it? Also, check your BIOS and make sure that on the advanced tab that the last option (should be sata) is set to ACHI and not compatibility.
Usually on the 205's that is set to compatibility for PC Check to run, and it needs ACHI for it to boot to anything. If the hard drive test passed, take the hard drive out, and see if you can boot to cd's that way. |

Re: Toshiba Laptop Display & Boot Problems
Ran full hardware diagnostics and the LCD test is the only one that failed. Yes, I can boot into BIOS in both the LCD screen and external monitor with no problem. I tried Live Linux disks and get similar result with screen blanking out after initial boot. The BIOS is updated but there is no option for SATA/ACHI and no option for screen brightness. Thank guys but I am still searching for a solution...

Re: Toshiba Laptop Display & Boot Problems
try downloading and booting to memtest86+ it runs from the system memory only.
I had a toshiba on my bench once that was doing the same thing yours is, basically it wouldn't boot to anything that needed to write or access to the hard drive (alot of OS boot discs do that, and some diag discs don't) I had to replace the hard drive, even though it passed PC Check and drive fitness test. After it was replaced it worked and booted to anything just fine. I'd suggest if you have another hard drive around, install that, or take out your hard drive and see if you can boot to anything. |
