Toshiba satellite gives ide #1 error

Hi,
I have a Toshiba Satellite 1800-s253 with a cd/dvd combo drive Toshiba sd-c2502. I also have Windows ME. The dvd functionality stopped working so i tried to fix it. I couldnt find the right firmware for it but found one for the same drive but for a dell laptop. So i decided to try it. It flashed my bios and upon restart it gave me an ide #1 error and i could not use the drive. So i did some researching and checked in the device manager and it was not there. however i checked in the safe mode device manager and it was there but i could not use it. It also allows me to open up the drive during the bios startup but after the ide #1 error i cant.
so i opened up the bios and it is marked down as a slave drive. ive heard that toshiba laptops require the cd drive to be a master drive but i cant find any way to change it. ive tried removing the hard drive and replacing it but it hasnt worked. i have also tried to locate firm ware and drivers for it to correct it but have not had any success. I did find that if i removed the Ali M5229PCI Bus Master Ide Controller that i could open the drive but it could not detect or read it.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Toshiba satellite gives ide #1 error

Hi timthez
most of the optical drives in Toshiba laptops are not in cable select mode
and LG CDROM drives has a switch in the rearside which let you choose the desired mode (slave or master).
in case you don't have a LG drive , you'll have to open your optical drive and solder the 45 and 47 pin's together in the rear connector .
I did it twice and it works great!
