ASUS S96J Laptop won't turn on

hi, i brought a S96J laptop from powernotebooks approximately 3 years ago and never had many major problems with it. recently i discovered that a large amount of ants have decided to enter my laptop so i isolated it for a while and put ant-killing powder around it.
after leaving it alone for a few days i decided to plug it back in. but it would not turn on anymore.
i opened up the laptop and discovered no ant infestations.
is there anyway to find out what the problem is or force it to turn on?

Re: ASUS S96J Laptop won't turn on

sounds like you had a computer bug....

ok then, lol, any lights on your computer when its plugged into the ac adapter? what happens when you hit the power button? try it with only the battery, no ac adapter, and again with no battery and only the ac adapter.

If you have no lights at all even when the adapter is plugged in, I would test the adapter with a volt meter, make sure its putting out the proper voltage.

Re: ASUS S96J Laptop won't turn on

i no longer have a battery because it broke. however i do have another laptop of the exact same model and using that laptop's power cable does not change anything.

when i tried and turn it on today i noticed that certain parts of the motherboard becomes pretty warm. first it was the RAM which i then removed now it's just the area around the AC cord.

and no lights come on whatsoever when i hit the power button. (no fans either)

Re: ASUS S96J Laptop won't turn on

ok, no lights no nothing when you try and turn it on. Next thing I would do is look at the dc-in jack, how does it connect to the motherboard? wires or soldered in? If wires, test the voltage at the connector to the motherboard.

also you can try to start removing devices, every device, cable, wire you see from the motherboard. Leave only the ac adapter/dc-in jack, memory, cooling fan, power switch, and lcd cable plugged in and power it on that way.

If the power comming out of the dc-in jack is correct and you can't power it on with everything removed, then I would look at the power switch, try swapping power switches, still nothing then i would try swapping motherboards and see if it powers on.

Re: ASUS S96J Laptop won't turn on

i have stripped the entire system to just mobo/CPU and it still does not turn on.

my DC jack is soldered in.

I found out that when i plug in the DC jack the mobo smells like something's burning so i'm convinced that an ant must have lodged itself between two wires and caused a short circuit.

i have located the little transistor that make the burning smell and im convined that it must be fried. the only question left is if my mobo will survive?

you can try and find an electronics repair shop that will replace components on the motherboard, but you may be very hard pressed to find a place that will do it. Usually the whole motherboard needs to be replaced.
