HP Pavilion ze2000 with a very odd over-heating problem
So a few years back I was given an HP Pavilion ze2000 for Christmas and served me quite well for a while, after about a year I began having lockups on the touchpad and keyboard after so many hours of use and sometimes the computer would shut down completely. This past Christmas, one day the computer got very hot very fast and finally at one point shut off and after two days would not turn on. I thankfully had received money to buy a new computer and since then this laptop has set as a paperweight. On a whim one day, I pulled out the computer and tried to turn it on, surprise surprise, it booted fully to my desktop. Worked for a little while, then froze up and shut down and will work again in a fews hours following. Serious heat issue going on here. Someone I know is looking to buy this computer and repair it themselves, I don't believe it's an expensive internal problem with the motherboard or such things as it's a working computer until it overheats. Would purchasing some cooling paste and applying it to the processor solve this issue and until then, how can I get this computer operational to a fair degree?
EDIT: I have tried several times to clean out the computer with compressed air can and a heavy duty air compressor. While it is sometimes affective, it's not performing a job that could relate to it being a pure dust issue. Last edited by dustindh; 07-22-2009 at 08:10 PM. Reason: Add some points |

Re: HP Pavilion ze2000 with a very odd over-heating problem
then theres a couple things you can try doing, first, although rather obvious but still will say just in case...have you checked to make sure the fan is working and that all the blades are still there, not damaged in any way, no noise from the fan other than a whisper?
check the heatsink, see if thats damaged somehow, any cracks, something that will stop the heat flow from getting to the grill part. and yes, I would also reapply thermal paste to the processor, and graphics chip (most laptops will cool both) lastly, I would also update the BIOS, there very well could be something fixed in there for fan speed and temps. |
