I have an inspiron 5100 that was given to me from a friend. It worked for a while until the AC adapter overheated and died. When I restarted the laptop it Posted "wrong Ac adapter laptop will run on battery power" (or something to that degree). When I used up all the battery I bought a new AC adapter from dell. Unfortunately when I got it home i plugged it in and the laptop wouldn't start up. I plug in the power adapter and nothing happens except i here a small ring from the motherboard. No lights go on or anything. When I hit the power butten the three lights in the front blink and the heatsink fan turns on for less than a second then shut off. Any ideas?
~wipeout PS. I have tryed everything all the way to taking the whole thing apart and then putting it back together. |

Re: Dell inspiron 5100 won't start up.
Yes I'm shure that the Adapter is correct. When I plug in the adapter both the power and battery charger lites go on but turn off in less than a second. When I press the power butten first the power blinks than the center light (Ram?, Processor?, HD?) blinks then both the power and battery light blink then nothing happens.

Re: Dell inspiron 5100 won't start up.
sounds like a fried motherboard if the fan stopes after few seconds and it wont boot
or try to recovery it -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Here are the recovery instructions from Dell. 1. Reboot, and press Ctrl + F11 at the Dell logo. 2. The Dell™ PC Restore by Symantec screen will come up. 3. Select "Restore" or use the Tab key to highlight it and press Enter. 4. if you wish to continue, click "Confirm", or use the Tab key to highlight it and press Enter. 5. When the utility is finished, click "Finish", or use the Tab key to highlight it and press Enter. __________________ |

Re: Dell inspiron 5100 won't start up.
My inspiron 5100 wont load either. I can turn it on and get all lights and the fan and a little other noise but nothing will show on the screen. The person I got it from thought it was a bad screen or video card but I have seen the Dell logo screen once. I took out a memory stick that I think may have been bad and thats when I got the screen. But, I can not get it to appear again. Any ideas? Thanks
