Re: keys on toshiba laptop not working
Unhook the keyboard from the motherboard and use a USB connected keyboard. Observe if problem persists. If problem is gone, consider getting a new keyboard for your laptop.

Re: keys on toshiba laptop not working
AFAIK external keyboards (ones used in PC desktops) can be connected to a laptop via the PS2 connector or via USB.
Another way to test is to know if the problem is specific to a program alone (ex. Notepad) or is it common to all (ex. Notepad, Word, Excel, email, browser, etc...). Also if you want, try another operating system like linux. Best way (as you said you are not computer savvy), is to have it checked by a professional.

Re: keys on toshiba laptop not working
once again Trigger thanks or the prompt reply, i shall try to get one o those usb keyboards, because the only connection I seem to have on this laptop wont allow me to plug in a psp2 keyboard as you suggested, short o that working, i guess i may have to take it to a repair shop,
