HP laptop and AOL Instant Messenger help

i have a HP HDX 18 laptop/notebook running windows vista on a 32-bit operating system. i am attempting to web-chat/web-cam using AOL instant messenger with the built in web-cam and mic that is part of the hardware of my machine

all other audio coming out of the machine sounds perfect but all my AOL Instant Messenger sounds are distorted especially the voices of people i am attempting to communicate with through the web-chat/web-cam feature. the people on the other end of the conversation can see/hear me perfectly. i can see the other people fine as well. but when it comes to their voice it sounds like they are in the witness protection agency or doing an interview in a situation where they don't want their voice to be recognized.

i have already tried trouble shooting this problem and it is definitely something with my machine.

can anyone offer and help?

hi and welcome to TSF you could try updating the sound driver from hp support website for your model or try uninstall of aol then reinstall
