hp / compaq nx6310 laptop - dead!!

hi, my freind had xp on this machine then upgraded to vista home prem. he went to downgrade put the xp disk in at first it wouldnt reconise it, then it did and loaded the setup files etc, it proceeded to install xp then froze for a couple of mins, the laptop then switched itself off and now refuses to power up. it was powered at the time on mains , the charger is ok as we've tested it. has anybody got any ideas??? all help much appreciated. thx.

So basically at this point you cannot power ON the laptop anymore?

Try the suggestions below (try only those you have not tried yet)...

Test output voltage of AC adapter or test it in another (similar laptop).
Test battery in another (similar laptop).

Also Try to:

Startup on battery only
Startup on AC only

If symptoms persist or if this has been done...

Try the steps below:

Power OFF the computer
Remove the battery
Unplug AC
Press and hold Power ON button for 30 secs. at least
Put back the battery
Plug back AC
Power ON as normal

If the same thing happens...

Take it apart/Disassemble the laptop
Remove the rest, except RAM, mobo, LCD and power ON switch
Power ON using adapter
