black screen

I have a Toshiba Satellite, and the screen won't turn on, but the hard drive spins, and everything else works fine. I just need to know what's wrong with it before I send it off anywhere or decide if I just need to go buy a new one.

Just before anything went wrong, I was playing a game, and the screen made all these funny colors, then went black. I assume this means that it overheated. Is this damage permanent? Did it fry the onboard video/mobo?

I let it sit for a while, and same response. When I tried an external monitor, the windows logo came up for a bit, then the screen went black again. I wondered if it might just be the video drivers, but somehow I don't think I've been that lucky.

Please let me know if there's any hope, and what you think is wrong with it. Either the screen which is fixable? Or mobo, and I need a new one.

Thanks

Re: black screen

2 things to try when hooked to the external monitor and the signal goes off did you hit FN
+ F5 to see if it would switch screens? If you shine a flashlight across the screen from side to side can you see an image?

There are issues with Nvidia Laptop GPU's HP and Dell have extended warranties for an additional year(Like you only expected the laptop to last 2 years) but so far Toshiba has not, that I know of but it's worth a call.
