Recently the hard drive in my bf's laptop had died a painful death, so, I replaced it for him. He has a Gateway w340ui (aka mt3707)
Originally it was running Windows vista home basic, but after replacing the hard drive I was forced to put ultimate on it, twas the only vista disk I had. the hard drive is practically the same as what it came with originally, the only thing different is the os after doing all of this though, the internet, only while surfing the net, is much slower, and when he plays wow it will kick him off sometimes saying that it can't load some of the textures. Also, on start up, it doesn't always find windows... Help plz??? |

Re: AH!! Help? new hard drive problems :(
Sounds to me like Vista Ultimate is being the memory hog that it is and slowing him down. Try running WOW on the lowest settings to see if he can still play. If not, you may need to go get your Vista Basic on.

Re: AH!! Help? new hard drive problems :(
I tried the startup repair and it found no problems, I also checked the boot order, something I forgot to do after installing the hard drive
it seems to load and find the os ok, but here at my house the internet speed is fine, yet at his house it apparently is much slower than it used to be. Could it be just his connection, or something else? with nothing open cpu usage isn't high, and ram usage is below 600mb, he has a total of two gigs so there shouldn't be a problem, right? have yet to check wow, forgot his password :/ |

Check the Device Manager. To do this go to Start and type in "devmgmt.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter.
Are there any devices listed with ? or ! - if so, please let us know which one's they are.

On start up I got an error message. had to put in installation disk and used the repair computer option which said that hal.dll was corrupt and it successfully repaired the file
after it started up again I got an error message that said HID MFC application has stopped working... should I be worried about that??? went to the device manager as suggested, but nothing was listed with a ? or ! also twice while checking out the laptop it randomly locked itself... any suggestions??? still randomly won't find os sometimes.... Re: AH!! Help? new hard drive problems :(
yeah, I guess.... well he took his laptop back home, he's hoping he can try to find a copy of basic to put on there to see if it works.
I'll tell him to run the diagnostic thing whenever he wakes up (I really hope it's not the problem... again) ah and good to hear that your son is ok, makes me afraid to ever get my appendix out :/ |

my bf has given up on his poor laptop, but I will not!!!
he's getting a new one today and giving me his old one I won't let our efforts go to waste!!!!! *does battle cry* I'll try to run the diagnostic thing later, maybe when I get home from work or something and let ya know what happens the hard drive won't show up...I tried turning on the laptop and it kept saying no os found, and after 3-4 tries I looked in the bios to check the boot order and there was nothing next to the hard drive, it just said HDD: I put in the old broken hard drive and it picked it up fine, didn't work of course, but it was picked up.... is it ok if I cry now? edit: Instead of trying to fix it, I'm just going to return the hard drive and give up :( this darn laptop keeps breaking my heart and I can just save up for a new one later on anyway.... *sigh* Last edited by dai; 07-06-2009 at 08:57 PM. |
