Not seeing CD DVD player after format
Hi,
Ok I have a laptop and I formatted it from Vista to intentionally place XP pro on it. I tried to format it once and then checked the partition. It had both NTFC and Fat 32 on it so i deleted the partitions and made one of Fat32 then reformatted. When I started up the computer I changed the Bios to run from the CDROM and it wont work. In the BIOS it can be seen the make and that its there but when I try from D-Z to run setup.exe in DOS it says it doesnt exist (Ive tried ME and 98 CD's aswell). Also when the computer starts up it says "Device driver not found: 'MSCD001' No valid CDROM device drivers selected" and doesnt load the generic driver off the bootdisc. I have tried: reformatting, repartitioning, downloading a new driver for the make off the net and copying it in DOS across to the C:\Windows, I'm also missing (or corrupt) BTDOSM.SYS which is on the Bootdisc and I copy it across into the root and it still wont work. Have tried scandisk, no problems, tried booting from an external DVD, booting from a networked pc. Does anyone have any ideas? Ive done plenty of these before and never had a problem with the CDROM, flash drive yes. As far as I know it was working fine before I formatted it but I had to remove Vista as the person that bought it said it wasnt a legal copy and was asking for registering. Thanks in advance Ethan |

Re: Not seeing CD DVD player after format
OK let me confirm some things. You want to completely wipe the drive and install XP right? And you have put the XP CD in the drive and rebooted, what happens? Does it just bypass the CD and try to boot from HD? watch for a message that says "press any key to boot from CD".

Re: Not seeing CD DVD player after format
I want to wipe the HD and put XP pro on. I put the CD in the CDROM and frm DOS it cant see the CDROM. It knows its there in the BIOS. I can tell it to boot from the CDROM in the BIOS but it says something like no device drivers loaded because it cant find the CDROM. I can boot from Bootdisc 98 but that takes me into DOS and when I specify that i want to setup.exe from any drive D-Z it says its not there with the XP disc in the drive. Bascially the pc doesnt see the CDROM anymore. Its coming through with an error message of BTDOSM.SYS? (not sure dont have it with me right now), and that line 11 in CONFIG.SYS is corrupt. Tried to reload CONFIG.SYS from floppy and it says it'sd ok but still bringing up the same error on reboot.
(I have to confess at this time i'm not a pro, I'm a "book for dummies, self taught guy" so I'm open to any suggestions) Thanks for getting back to me so quickly, you need anymore info please let me know. Ethan |

Re: Not seeing CD DVD player after format
You should be able to set the CDROM as the first boot device in the BIOS. Insert an original XP CD into the drive, and it should boot into the XP setup. All of the drivers needed are on the XP CD.

Re: Not seeing CD DVD player after format
I have the CDROM as the boot device but it says 'no cdrom device detected, drivers not loaded' It cant actually find the CDROM itself so then it automatically goes to the 2nd choice on my boot list, which I have as the floppy and then it'll just boot into DOS and whether I choose to start the computer with or without the CDROM it can't find it. I have gone through windows setup on the blue screen in DOS by booting from the XP CD but after about a minute it says the computer has had a critical error and it just freezes when I reboot it'll do it all over again with no CDROM being detected. I know its there, the BIOS can see it because its teling me the make and it will allow me to select it as a boot device but it wont actually boot from there.
