Question External Monitor and DVD Playback

I have Windows Vista Home premium on my Asus X83V laptop. I hooked up a 22" external monitor to my laptop to great success except when I want to play DVDs. I get the same result whether I use Windows Media Player or VLC. The movie itself will show up extremely washed out white, even though the rest of the screen (including the black "bars" on top/bottom) remains normal colored. If I watch the DVDs on my laptop screen, I have no issue.

Does anyone know why this is happening and have any idea how to fix this?

Thank you!

Re: External Monitor and DVD Playback

The resolution settings are fine. Everything shows up on my computer just fine (pc games, youtube, etc.) except DVD movies.

Codecs & drivers are up to date.

Re: External Monitor and DVD Playback

Thank you for your response, but I don't think it's the VGA cable if everything else shows up fine except for actual screen containing the dvd.

Here is an image to illustrate. On the top is a screen shot of my external monitor playing the dvd. On the bottom is a shot of my external monitor as the primary with my desktop extended to my laptop monitor, and my laptop monitor is now playing the dvd.
