hp pavillion dv6700 not booting up
Hey new here and having a problem with my HP Pavillion DV6700 laptop.
It's out of warranty and my USB/Power button board had become loose so it wasn't charging the computer at all. I took it completely apart got the model number of the USB/Power button board, installed it, and put it back together. I press the power button and nothing happens. I tried putting the USB/Power Button board back in and still nothing. I'm thinking something either happened to my power button board or something happened with my motherboard. I barely moved my motherboard when i took the laptop apart I never even completely took it out of the case Is there anyway I can test this out with spending money or anything? Thanks, Nick |

Re: hp pavillion dv6700 not booting up
OK according to my USB/power board I have a short somewhere in my laptop
my CD drive, bluetooth, webcam, hard drive, LCD panel are all disconnected...so is it my motherboard causing the short or something else? Any ideas? |

Re: hp pavillion dv6700 not booting up
I see in your opening post that you tried putting back the OLD power board but you still get no power ON... is this correct? If yes, then it could be your motherboard shorting out.
I suggest you check all cables/connections and make sure laptop is getting power. Try with a charged battery. Test also your AC adapter output if it is giving a correct voltage.

Re: hp pavillion dv6700 not booting up
Hello
I'm home now, but if I remember correctly, a cable from the USB/power board goes very close to the battery pins. It has been seen to create shorts. It has been observed also re-attached in the wrong way and frying everything... You state that "according to...I have a short" what do you mean by that? As TriggerFinger suggested, check if your AC adapter is functional: Is the blue lead on? (on the Power Jack)

Re: hp pavillion dv6700 not booting up
can someone help me with testing this thing. I've been looking on the internet and haven't been able to find much if anything.
I have a multimeter and i'm receiving a good amount of Ohms on my USB/Power board i've used the multimeter on a bunch of different things on the MOBO but haven't had any luck I have it set to DC volts and i plugged my laptop into the wall and plugged everything up...theres a cube plug that goes into the MOBO with 2 red and 2 black wires and I tried testing that but I got nothing just the multimeter reading going from 0.00 to -0.00 can anyone help or at least point me in the right direction? |

Re: hp pavillion dv6700 not booting up
Short of totally removing the mainboard from the base enclosure, no.
But let's summarize: The AC Adapter itself is functional. When you plug it into the power jack on the mainboard the blue led (the ring around the jack) remains off. The mainboard gets no power-at least from the AC Adapter. When disassembled -check the Maintenance and Service Guide Here http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/manualCategory?cc=us&dlc=en&product=3636595&lc=en&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN- keep it on an Antistatic surface. You can then connect Screen, Keyboard, PowerBoard and Switchboard/PowerOn button and power on-try anyway. Is not that difficult just a bit scary at first.

Re: hp pavillion dv6700 not booting up
Hi
Then either the power board is defective, or the mainboard.

Re: hp pavillion dv6700 not booting up
Hello again
You actually pose a different -and interesting-question. You started with the USB board, and the power jack that goes with it (or near it). The PowerButton board (P/N 431437-001) can be and has been defective in a number of systems, however you cannot know unless you replace it. Are you also sure that the power board you have is appropriate for the AC Adapter you are using? (65/90W) What makes people repair or not a system, is the ability to swap parts and by elimination determine the cause of a malfunction. From then on, correctly documenting steps taken for a given repair makes the difference. I know what the possible cause(s) may be, but you do not have the spare parts to validate it. Can be : Defective mainboard Defective Power Button board Defective Power Board Defective Screen(!)-did you try disconnecting the screen completely?

HP Pavillion DV6700 Power Question
OK posted on here a few days ago about a problem I was having with my laptop.
Original problem was my USB/Power Board was not working anymore. I took the laptop apart, ordered and installed the new part. Put everything back together and no power no nothing So then I took everything back apart and tried the old USB/Power Board and still no power no nothing So then I used my multimeter and checked the new USB/Power Board and I was consistently getting 18+ Ohms on a 20k scale. When I tested the battery lead I was also getting the same 18+ Ohms on a 20k scale. I'm at a loss as to what could be wrong now can anyone help me out in diagnosing my laptop. Thanks |

Re: hp pavillion dv6700 not booting up
Try with a good/working motherboard for isolation purposes.

Re: hp pavillion dv6700 not booting up
I don't have access to a good working motherboard...I'm a college student just trying to repair my computer
It doesn't make any sense to me as to why its not working though. I tested the outlet get steady voltage from it. I tested the tip of the power cord get steady voltage from that. I tested the ohms on the USB/Power button board and get steady ohms from that. I tested the tip on the USB/Power button board to the battery lead and get steady ohms on that. Is there something I'm missing here because It would appear power is flowing through the motherboard, but its not turning on? |

Re: hp pavillion dv6700 not booting up
So, let's go by the elimination process:
What have you NOT changed or tested? You tested (by your statement, and correct me if I'm wrong) Power Button Power Board Battery AC Adapter Memory I take it that-as illustrious as you appear to be, that's praise not cynicism-the switchboard cables are attached correctly. Normally, if a system had the power led on but nothing happened, I'd suspect mainboard or cpu. I think that in your case the cpu is the most easy to check: Someone will have a similar, that in the spirit of -blah blah blah- will be willing to allow you to use it, or accept that you will install your cpu on his/her system. Then will be nothing else to test: If the cpu is not defective is the mainboard. Systens are dying for no reason. You may have-or the person that assembled your system-have ESDed the mainboard. Those kind of damage can take months to manifest.

Re: hp pavillion dv6700 not booting up
OK got in working...well temporarily anyway...
So i had no re screwed down and re routed all the cabling but i'd gotten the computer powered up...hadn't even plugged in the keyboard yet i got an error message saying operating system not found...so i figured awesome i just have to reinstall my operating system and i'm good to go i re-hooked, screwed down, routed all the cabling...push the power button and nothing...I'm clearly getting power now though as both the AC-DC power connector is lit up blue and the battery is charging constantly now... maybe i messed up the ribbon cable from the MOBO to the power button board or something... |
