laptop won't bootup

I have a Compaq Presario laptop model F600. When I attempt to turn it on the power lite and hard drive lite come on then immediately shut off. This happens with the battery in or out.

Re: laptop won't bootup

Try reseating the RAM sticks. Also try them one at a time in each of the RAM slots.

Btw, at what part of the boot up does it shut off?

Re: laptop won't bootup

Hi
Remove main battery, AC Adapter and the CMOS battery and leave it so for 15'.

Has been observed to work on similar symptoms on the DV8000/DV9000 series.

Re: laptop won't bootup

The machine shuts off immediately. Does not even post. I have tried checking the ram. I have also removed the battery to see if it will boot and it does not. It also does not boot with the battery in. I have not removed the cmos battery but did disconnect it for awhile and trie again. Still nothing. I found on the web last night at the compaq site that if the battery indicator comes on then goes off the power adapter is probably bad or the power jack may have a bad connection. There is a cheap power adapter I found online so I may try that. I hate wasting money but I am pretty much out of options.

Thanks

Re: laptop won't bootup

If it immediately shuts off at power ON and laptop is plugged into mains, then first make sure that adapter is giving out the correct voltage. If possible, use a good/working/charged battery.

Assuming you are using a good/working adapter and battery but still laptop shuts off at power ON then start with replacing all the RAM sticks with a good/working one. If you have two RAM sticks installed, test with only one, testing each of the sticks individually (and in each of the individual slots).

If using a good/working/new RAM stick does not resolve the shutting off problem, then I suggest you take the laptop apart (leave RAM, mobo, LCD and power ON switch) then try to power ON. Post back what happens.
