battery only charges when PC is off/sleep

hi,

i'm new in this forum so if i'm in the wrong case oor thread please indicate me to the right place.
My problem is the the following, I have a laptop ( hp pavillon zd8000) and the battery will only charge when the computer is turned of or if it is in sleep mode. once i turn the computer on the battery stops charging and computer uses the AC adaptor. my battery works finee i think because it charges to 100% and when I use the battery without the AC adapator my computer works fine for 2 hours. i have tried different batteries and different AC adaptor problem not solved. I sent my computer to HP and they have changed my motherboard and when i got my computer back it still had the same problem. what could it be?? can anyone help me??

Welcome to TSF...

By any chance sharing with us what made you say it is not charging when laptop is in use? If you have changed the motherboard, have you tried the battery in another similar computer and observed if it behaves the same? Is the AC adapter genuine HP... one that came with the laptop?

actually i haven't tried the battery in another similar computer because i don't have one right now. but i have worked with similar computers before that and those had no such problem; battery would end fast or battery wouldn't charge at all. But now it's different. i can tell the battery is not charging because the battery percentage stays the same when my computer is in use and the blue indicator on the laptop that shows that battery is in charge isn't lit up. but once the computer is turned off that blue indicator lites up so it means that it is charging and when i turn the computer back on the battery percentage has gown up. that problem came suddenly and looks like the change of motherboard didn't change anything. could it be a software problem??

and it's the genuine ac adaptor that is used. i tried other ac adapters from the same model of computer but no change.

I doubt if it is a software issue but it is possible. One way to check is to run a different OS via CD/DVD drive (ex. linux live CD) so you won't have to install it in your HDD. If the problem is caused by something in Windows, then IMO you won't have any charging problems while in Linux... battery will charge even if laptop is in use under Linux.

I've been very occupied this week... sorry u answer so late... like you said i tried with a bootable linux CD... NO AMELORATION.
I'm sending the computer back to HP...
