HP dv9000 suspected video problems (not covered in extended warranty)
I got excited when I saw this thread but my model is not covered: HP/Compaq video problems
Anyways I suspect the video card needs replaced and just want some confirmation before I shell out the cash for a card. I would hate to get it, install it and still have issues. I have glitched text even when booting from CD-ROM and can only get video by hooking up an external monitor. There are also random graphical glitches all over when its not just text being output. The LCD has the lamp on but is blank. No cracks or visible damage, it was not dropped or anything just suddenly stopped working. *edit* OK some bizarre act of God just happened. I installed a special unattended install version of XP that comes with other 3rd party software built in and all the graphical glitches are gone and the LCD screen is working perfectly too. Another SP3 CD I used the other day did not have such success and even started having random BSOD after using it a bit. I hope it stays this way!

Sorry for the bump but it won't let me edit.
*edit2* Immediately after posting the above it shut itself down and when i turned it back on the problem was back. It only works in 640x480 4-bit color via external VGA. Resolution/color depth is locked. |

Does it work fine with an external monitor? If yes, then consider replacing the LCD.

Re: HP dv9000 suspected video problems (not covered in extended warranty)
No it does not work at all without the external. Just a blank LCD with backlight lamp on. During this last install of windows it actually worked perfectly for a few minutes during the unattended install of SP3 and/or 3rd party stuff but then suddenly shut down and went back to just giltchy external output.
I will reformat and reinstall again to see if this was a fluke or happens again. If it happens again perhaps I can suspend the self-installer at that point or figure out exactly what was being installed that temporarily fixed it. |

Re: HP dv9000 suspected video problems (not covered in extended warranty)
It was a fluke btw, did not repeat when I reformatted/installed again. Everything points to a bad video card. Similar laptops are going for about what it is going to cost to fix so I'm just going to backup the HD and scrap it. Some guy on craigslist that buys broken laptops offered 90$ for it.
