Laptop Overheating

ok i apologize if this isn't the correct forum, but it seemed like a logical place to put this question. With that being said i'll start from the top to give out as much info as i can.

I am currently using a Toshiba A215-S4807 laptop, that came with windows vista. I finally got tired enough of vista to upgrade to XP i guess you could say. Well unfortunately toshiba didn't have near all of the XP drivers on the their website... so a day of searching and microsoft update lead me to find just about all the ones i needed. I soon found another issue while gaming, my laptop seem to overheat. It has been running at a normal temperature of about 68C with windows XP, i'm unsure of what it was running at with vista. However, with XP it seems to like getting to hot and shutting down which was not a issue when it had vista. While playing games the core temp can get up to 80 celsius and above (which usually results in a shutdown). Unfortunately I have not found a way that works to speed up the cpu fan... but i don't see why it should be getting so hot when it didn't seem to with vista.

I have also upgraded the ram to 4gigs (but this was done way before i had XP or any issues)

SpeedFan 4.38 averages my HDD temp at 44C, but my Core cpu temp at atleast 77C while gaming, 69C doing average things.

If anyone has any ideas, please let me know.. thank you for the future comments!

Re: Laptop Overheating

Have you checked vents/heatsink areas for any obstruction? Also have you tried opening the laptop up and cleaning the insides and reapplying thermal compound?

Re: Laptop Overheating

yes i have checked for obstructions around my fans, however i did not apply new thermal gel yet. My first instinct told me there was some issue caused while switching from vista to XP, so somethig like that didn't come to mind for me as being a problem when it seemed to work fine in vista (or it didn't shut down randomly anyway). Unfortunately i'm not sure of what the temp was when i ran vista on the machine. But, i'm willing to give applying new gel a shot.

Re: Laptop Overheating

IMO there should be no 'temperature' related issue if you switch to XP. If indeed the problem is only present in XP then it could be something else other than the temps (considering we do not have temp readings in Vista).

Re: Laptop Overheating

i can agree with that. I will probally end up putting new thermal gel on it... looking around to see if anything else may be causing problems, and get a cooling pad for it.

Re: Laptop Overheating

A cooling pad is not necessary (although it is good to have one). What I do is locate the vents and make sure those areas are elevated at least 0.25 inch from the desk to give it a good breathing space.
