[SOLVED] Packard Bell M5264 laptop CPU upgrade?

A few days ago I managed to recycle a 6-years old Packard Bell laptop wich, according to the manufacturer's specs and the PC Wizard 2008 diag software, it has mounted a Pentium 4 @ 2,66 GHz Socket 478 mPGA, the same type found in the whole majority of desktop systems around there.

But as I do own various other P4 processors, including two Pentium 4 HT @ 3,06 and 3,20 GHz... my question is:

Can I go and try to update the processor directly? Will the mobo crash if I try to do so? There'll be a noticeable speed increase or maybe will be better to leave the machine as-is?

Thanks in advance for sharing your thoughts!

Manu

I have done it one Pentium M but not on Pentium 4. It may be the same. Personally, I will definitely try it (provided replacement CPU fits).

Re: Packard Bell M5264 laptop CPU upgrade?

OK, I'll go and give a try... I think the whole performace will boost up with this mod, but I must check if the cooling system will can handle the guessable temperature rising... I hope so, because this laptop is running pretty cool with its actual processor...

I'll post here the results of this experience, for everyone to take note of it... :)

Thanks a lot for your input, my friend...

Re: Packard Bell M5264 laptop CPU upgrade?

Hi everyone!

Well, good news... I've successfully upgraded this laptop to 1 Gb DDR SODIMM (2 x 512 Mb modules) and I've also upgraded the processor altough not to the intended P4 3,2 HT (socket-compatible), but up to the P4 3,06.

The main reason for the HT version not working is for the bus, I think... This HT @ 3,20 which I intended to install first is fitted with 1 Mb caché and a 800 MHz bus, and the original processor was a P4 2,6 GHz with 512 Mb cache and a 533 MHz bus.

So I tried with the P4 3,06 wich has the same specs in terms of cache and bus and it worked very well. Of course I cleaned well the whole thing and renewed the termal compound, and adjusted the BIOS so it can recognize the new speed.

i've performed some stability tests and again it worked well.

I hope this can help any other individual with the same experiment in mind.

Thanks a lot for all your inputs!

Manu
