HP zv6000 Laptop freezes on Bootup
Hi everyone! Here's my funky problem:
I have an HP zv6000 (AMD 64 chip) that I stopped using because it would freeze at the windows XP logo. After many attempts it stopped showing the windows logo, and froze at blank screen. Safe mode wouldn't load either. Soon it had trouble getting past the 'HP setup options' screen. I tried replacing RAM, no difference. I gave up and built a new system. I later put the hp's Hard drive into the new system and while I can the access the files perfectly, I found it won't boot windows. Makes me think XP got corrupted. So now after 6 months I've pulled out the zv6000 laptop and tried checking the startup again (with no Hard drive installed). Plugged in to the wall, the 'lightning bolt' light is on = good. Press power on, and it lights up correctly. CD drive spins. HP logo splashes on the screen. I've tried booting about 6 times now. 3 times it has froze at the HP setup screen. 3 times it has let me access BIOS and then froze after exiting BIOS. Any ideas as to whether I should assume the Motherboard is in good or bad condition? Does anyone know if I can access BIOS does that mean CPU is good? anything other ideas? thanks!!!!! |

Re: HP zv6000 Laptop freezes on Bootup
The symptoms you descibe are very common.
Stick the hard drive back in the laptop. Boot(if you can ) to the bios. Run the Hard drive diag. If you get a fail or see #7 in the message then your hard drive has got a small piece of real estate that has become flaky. Two ways around this. Replace the hard drive or create two partitions . The first one make it quite small and then install Xp to the second larger part. Or download Win7 and install it and I will almost bet you it will install faultlessly. Reason: Xp is very fussy about the media , whereas Win7 isn't. |

Re: HP zv6000 Laptop freezes on Bootup
Does it hang even before you get into BIOS setup? If so, run RAM tests first. Also check if CMOS battery is still good. Try with AC adapter only (remove battery) and also try it the other way around.
