laptop freezes

ok all i have a dell lapttop it keeps freezing on me i have to unplug the power cord and remove the battry to shut it down when i reboot it up again it logs onto windows and it freezes

Have you checked for overheating? Make sure vents/heatsink areas are free of any obstruction.

In addition, have you run HDD and RAM diagnostics? If not, I suggest you do that first. If there are hardware errors in either RAM or HDD, consider replacement. If you do not have errors in RAM or HDD, then run CHKDSK /F /R (preferably in Recovery Console using an XP install CD).

ok i run the diagnostic thats built in the laptop it gave me

DST short status test

test result failed error code 1000-0146 did research this code leading me to a bad hard drive???

msg unit0 ide status failed status bytes =64

controller code =1 msg = no
additional sense information

i gotten that after i ran the diagnostic

ok trigger my hard drive is going bad but i still can log onto it at times now i need to know whats the easiest way to back up my files on the corrupted hard drive
