Sony VAIO laptop with XP, once the power button pressed, the logo comes then goes to a black screen and hang up there. I checked the hard drives, they seemed OK; when I tried to install Win XP, it is going thru all the check for couple minutes and indicates "there is no hard drive attached, press F3 to quit setup". I went to check the BIAS setup, it showing both hard drives. I remove both hard drives and hook up to a different pc and reinstalled the XP and it worked on the other desktop computer, so I put the hard drive back to the laptop, its complaining "No operating system found". Do not know what to do, please help.
Thanks in advance. Last edited by chan07; 05-10-2009 at 11:42 PM. |

Re: VAIO PCG-8V1L Laptop goes to black/blank screen
If you have a clean hard drive (No system or software) that you can install into the laptop, use FDISK to setup and activate the partition. Use a Win boot disk and do "FORMAT /S" which will install just the OS files. If this works, all BIOS settings and hardware are functioning correctly.
Also, If you can go in through DOS replace the drivers, they may be corrupt. |

Re: VAIO PCG-8V1L Laptop goes to black/blank screen
Thanks, I will try that; earlier I talked to VAIO support person, he mentioned that I need the VGN-AR190G recovery CD, that way I can recover, but I don't have it; is anywhere I can download it for free.
Thanks in advance. |

Re: VAIO PCG-8V1L Laptop goes to black/blank screen
Sony Vaio will sell you a recovery CD. You can install with a Windows XP CD but it will not have the drivers, and you will have to manually install them from Sony's site. Start with one HDD. Go into the Bios and make sure that it is being recognized. boot off of your Windows CD and then once Setup starts choose do Delete the Partition and format the Drive. If this is a SATA hard drive, you will need to download the drivers for SATA from Sony's site. You can Slipstream them into your Windows Disc. if you don't have a floppy drive.

I am assuming my hard drive is SATA, but how can I verify that? I checked both hard drives, did not find any writing indicates SATA.
I tried to install using retailed XP software as Spike indicated, but it is indicating "setup did not find any hard disk drive". Trigger, yes, it came with XP but its indicating Vista capable. Can it be SATA drive? Last edited by dai; 05-13-2009 at 11:50 PM. |

I am not really so sure about this but I think you need to install the RAID driver here http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu...?mdl=VGNAR190G (F6 during XP install) so Windows installation can 'recognize' your drive.

Re: VAIO PCG-8V1L Laptop goes to black/blank screen[MOVED FROM WINDOWS]
If your laptop has a floppy drive you can use a floppy for the RAID driver. However if you do not have a floppy drive, you may need to slipstream the driver with the XP installation (use nLite).

Doing the F6 I passed the first milestone but stuck at the next point; I think it is asking me to install driver prior to install the XP, so I copy all the driver in a CD and try to install during prompt, but it is not recognizing that driver disk.
One time it went to the option to choose partition, but showing zero byte on hard drive, when I hit the Enter button to install, it went to stop error (blue screen). "0x8E (0x0000005, 0xF77FSC13, 0xF72C27E4, 0x0000000) Steupdd.sys - Address F77F5C13 base at F77C9000, Datestamp 41107c8f" Any help to install the SCSI driver to start with. Thanks I have couple attachments related to this topic. 100_5531 comes in the first place, when I power the laptop, 100-5528 comes after pressed F6 key. Last edited by dai; 05-13-2009 at 11:51 PM. |

Re: VAIO PCG-8V1L Laptop goes to black/blank screen[MOVED FROM WINDOWS]
Have you downloaded and extracted the RAID driver? I think there is a NOTE there about extracting it into a floppy. Have you done this (may be in another computer with a floppy drive)? If your laptop does not have a floppy drive that you can use to install this driver then I suggest you download the driver, extract it in a floppy then use nLite to slipstream it with the XP installation.
So how did you install the driver (via floppy or slipstream)? If you used a different method, other than what I mentioned here, then I suggest you share it also with us so we will know why it is not working. Also, have you made any 'recent' changes in BIOS setup (when you were trying to resolve the install problems before this)? If yes, I suggest you revert back any changes you have made.

Re: VAIO PCG-8V1L Laptop goes to black/blank screen[MOVED FROM WINDOWS]
So does that mean your XP installation already sees your hard drive?

Ya but it is not going any further, it comes to a screen which should allow me to partition, but it is showing 0MB (see the attached picture).
Any help will be appreciated. Thanks Andrew I am having almost the same problem with my Sony VAIO VGN-AR190G laptop; initially it didn't detect the hard drive, so I hit F6 while starting XP installation and extract RAID file to a floopy, and it seemed to detect the hard drive, but when it comes to the partition screen, it was showing 0MB (see the attached pic) for the hard drive and can't do anything afterwards. Looks like the manufactured recovery disk is the only solution, but if you happend to know any better way, please let me know as well. By the way, how do I find out my hard drive is SATA or anything else? If I don't have any option in the BIAS to change it to IDE, am I doing some thing wrong? Thanks in advance. Is there a parameter in BIOS setup to config HDDs as SATA/IDE/RAID? Also please check 5.3 Pre-Installation Using the F6 Method of the README included in the RAID driver files. EDIT: Are the options below the only ones you see (after F6 and pressing S)? ![]() Btw, how did you arrive to the screen below? ![]() ... if yes, have you tried the Configuration Utility? Lastly, have you run any HDD diagnostics? If not, try this one: http://download.seagate.com/seatools...f/eula/desktop

"Is there a parameter in BIOS setup to config HDDs as SATA/IDE/RAID?
Also please check 5.3 Pre-Installation Using the F6 Method of the README included in the RAID driver files. In bias setup there is nothing to change the HDD. Yes I did read the procedure in the RAID driver file. EDIT: Are the options below the only ones you see (after F6 and pressing S)?" If i scroll down there are three more option, but I tried everything. By the way, is the list showing the hard disk driver? "Lastly, have you run any HDD diagnostics? If not, try this one: http://download.seagate.com/seatools...f/eula/desktop " I did not run any HDD diagnostics, but the link you attached it for Seagate, my hard disk is Toshiba and is it possible to run diagnostics prior to install xp, if so how? Thanks a lot for your continue help. Andrew |

Re: VAIO PCG-8V1L Laptop goes to black/blank screen[MOVED FROM WINDOWS]
Yes I know it is Toshiba... AFAIK there's no downloadable util to test Toshiba hard drives but I have tested some using Seagate. Since you do not have Windows installed yet, the link I gave you is for a CD based diagnostic.

Re: VAIO PCG-8V1L Laptop goes to black/blank screen[MOVED FROM WINDOWS]
Trigger,
It's a break thru, I've been trying with only one hard drive, just 30 minutes ago I put both hard drives and tried and it worked, it allowed me to partitioned. 1st part is done, now I have a different problem. It is prompting me to insert a different driver file into A: drive, but the file size is 15.6Mbyte, so I tried it with flash drive and CD, none of them worked. How can I make it to see that 15.6MB file, since it's not going to fit in a floppy. Now I am getting more confident on this issue Thanks for your help all along. |

Re: VAIO PCG-8V1L Laptop goes to black/blank screen[MOVED FROM WINDOWS]
You got the HDDs formatted and ready for XP install but it is asking for another driver. The problem now is, you cannot install this driver because of its size.... is this correct?
If that is the case, then you need to slipstream ALL related drivers with your XP installer. Btw, what is new required driver? EDIT: I asked help from our team members so please do not be surprised if will one or two will join in and ask you some info. Thanks for understanding.

Re: VAIO PCG-8V1L Laptop goes to black/blank screen[MOVED FROM WINDOWS]
Intel Matrix Stroge Manager is the next driver it is requiring. As you said I am going to slipstream all the neccessory driver and going to try again.
I will let you know. Thanks |
