Slow Laptop..and weird pop ups

I need some help..I don't know if this is normal.or what..but my laptop is very slooow..like when it shuts down it takes so long for it to turn off completely..it's insane and it starts up pretty slow too.
Someone has told me that it might be the number of things that I have at startup..my startup items..ok, so I checked that out and only left my antivirus to start up and it was still slow! at first it was ok, but now it's slow again.
My comp. has like over 100 start up items and it starts up in like 20 seconds..not even, it's really fast, and my laptop is really slow, and it was like this when I bought it too..is there anything I can do..?

Just now I was playing a game and it just froze up and I opened up task manager and whenever I do that, I have this "alert popup" thing there..I don't know what that is..but I think that's what makes it like freeze and slow too..

I just seriously don't know what to do.and my laptop has like a mind of it's own..when I went to my startup items and unchecked everything except my antivirus, I dont' know what's up but now like everythings starting to load up again,,msn and all that..which I left unchecked!!

I don't know what to do, can someone please help me out,..how can I make my laptop faster..and I always check for updates and stuff too so I'm all up to date..and I have room on my laptop too...I don't know what to do..

How much RAM do you have?
Run all of your anti-virus/anti-spyware scans, particularly an anti-spyware scan. If you don't have one get Spybot S&D: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

How can I find out how much RAM I have..?
And yea I do scan, every week. I don't think I have any viruses or anything like that..but I'll scan again a bit later.
