Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop lcd issue

in the middle of surfing the net, the image on the lcd screen turned upside down. We have restarted the computer multiple times, unplugged the power cord and then restarted, hooked up an external monitor and the image was the same on that monitor as well. Any clues as to what happened and how to fix it? I haven't ever experienced this with any monitor before.

go into the software and rotate it back

If its Windows XP. Right click on an open area of your desktop. Select Graphics Option>Rotation>normal
