HP Compaq nx6110 backlight problem

The backlight on my nx6110 does not function. I can just barely make out what is on the screen by straining my eyes--the only way to effectively see everything is to plug it into another monitor.

I tried taking the battery out and rebooting--when I did this the backlight actually turned on and stayed on right up until the desktop became visible--then it went dark again.

Any ideas?

I've tried to mess around with the lcd switch and it doesn't make a difference.

It could be a dying backlight or a malfunctioning inverter. Not really easy to say which one unless you test the inverter like in this article: http://www.fonerbooks.com/test.htm
