how do i connect laptop to monitor

i have brocken the screen on my laptop... i have tryed to connect it to a monitor. it works for 5-10 secs , then changes back to brocken screen... if i start in safe mode, it stays on monitor, but i cant use internet...... any ideas??????:

Most laptops have a switch (combination of keys ex. Fn+F7 or Fn+F4) to toggle between LCD and external monitor. Check your Users Manual on the exact key combination. If you already know what key combination to press, boot into Windows normally and in Windows press the key combination.

Some laptops (IBM has this but not sure about the others), you can select CRT or LCD or BOTH in BIOS setup. Check your BIOS settings for this Display parameters.
