Using Recovery Discs On Different Laptop?

My friend has a Dell Dimension 4600 laptop. It has just died and is (of course) just out of warranty. A specialist has said it is the motherboard and cost would be almost as much as a new laptop.
He is considering the purchase of a DELL Studio 17 (N0473503) laptop, but this comes with Vista and Dell say they will not install Win XP instead.

He has the 6 'Recovery' discs (Win XP family Edition) from the old 4600 and we wonder if these could be used to either downgrade the new Studio 17 or perhaps install these to provide a dual boot.

I have never used 'Recovery' discs and would welcome any advice at all.

it is illeagal to try and use them on another computer and dell may not have the xp drivers for that model
