EEK! Random lights, beeping, not starting

Hi,
on a toshiba laptop, about 1.5 years old, running vista sp1 preduim(sry, too scared can't spell it).

Last night, I put my computer to sleep (I wanted to come back later), and after a while it beeped! It's like 5 beeps, stop, 5 beeps. On the screen, it looked like what would happen after the toshiba screen, one "_" flashing on a blank screen.

This morning(now), the on light is on, then when I press power button it have no effort, the screen is off. When I plug in AC(or whatever its called) power, Power, On, Battery light is on. And after a while of random button presses, and other stuff it starts. Toshiba screen, then _ with beeps, then off. The lights are strange, like half on(now), before even when its off the lights are on.

Could it be the fans? Couldn't remember, but I think the fan was not on when booting. Is there any way to get this fixed without losing the data on HD?

I got a virus in like 5 months ago, and kaspersky fixed it. Never got any virus recently. Thanks for your time to read this, as my english isn't good.

Edit: I'm posting this on another netbook, it's 6 short beeps, stop for 1s, 6 short beeps

Re: Random lights, beeping, not starting

Try using a good/working RAM module just for testing. If problem still occurs with new/working/good RAM module then do this: blank screen

Re: Random lights, beeping, not starting

You mean I buy a new RAM and replace it?

I think the problem isn't RAM because the lights for power is strange, but I'll try and find RAM..

Is it possible to retrive the data without too expensive(under $200)? I program flash games on the laptop and many new source files aren't backed up. Ty for your help.

I am just saying it could be the RAM and I believe it is worth looking into. It is up to you if you want to buy... I suggest 'borrow' because it will just be used for testing purposes.

Re: Random lights, beeping, not starting

I hear just contious beeps (sry my english isnt good) after the TOSHIBA screen. What does that mean? Can I still get the data since the laptop is a bit old and I got another laptop.. just want to transfer some of the data(flash source codes) to my new one.. I'll try opening the laptop and check the RAM, but now I'm going to travel soon (2 days later). I'll post back after I checked the RAM. Thanks for your help.

You may have to use a USB/IDE/SATA adapter so you can plug it another computer via USB.

I'll post back after I checked the RAM. Thanks for your help.
