Dell Latitude C840 reinstall

My hard drive fried; I need to reinstall completely. I have the original Dell CD's (Windows XP Pro) and a new empty hard drive. Can anyone give me complete instructions to reinstall?

Reinstall the operating system using DELL recovery discs? Plug in the new HDD and use Disc#1 of the recovery discs. Boot from the CD drive (make changes in the boot order in BIOS setup). Installation should be straightforward.

What about formatting the new hard drive?

I believe the installation procedure would go through that step. But if you want you can do this on a separate activity before you do the actual install. Try using DBAN.

The reason I asked is that I need instructions for the formatting. I don't have DBAN.

Installing from recovery discs is just like using an XP install CD. I suggest you read the guide on the link below first to familiarize yourself with the procedure. One of the steps is to create a partition on the new drive. Refer to the guide here:
