Sony Vaio CD Drive Not Recognised
Hi
I'm the newbie here ![]() ![]() My cd drive on my laptop died and a friend has lent me his Sony Vaio pcga-cd51/a externall cdrom. I'm running a Compaq evo: First Question: can I hook up the 2 together? Second Question: I tried and nothing happened. The connection is via pcmcia which I've never used before as mostly USB. When I put the card in nothing happens...the power light on the sony doesn't come up..nothing. I thought my laptop would recognise a new device and look for drivers but nothing. Do I need to install drivers first? Are the 2 compatible? I checked the H/W manager and it seems like the slots are OK -- can't test as don't have any other pcmcia devices? Any help trying to sort this out would be most welcome and get me on the road again for digitising my cds (maybe the reason why my internal drive blew up!!!) Thanks in advance Steve |

Re: Sony Vaio CD Drive Not Recognised
Does your laptop support PCMCIA? If it does, then AFAIK it should recognize the drive.

Re: Sony Vaio CD Drive Not Recognised
I don't think pcmcia is plug and play, so simply plugging into the computer won't do anything unless you manually install the drivers.

Re: Sony Vaio CD Drive Not Recognised
Just curious.. does your laptop support PCMCIA? Also (and I hate to ask this) does the drive work (have you tested it on another laptop)?
Post also the exact model of your laptop in your reply. Thanks.

Re: Sony Vaio CD Drive Not Recognised
Hi Triggerfinger
Thanks for the speedy response! I had a look at the HW manager and looks like something did happen!!! It now has a symbol "SCSI- and RAID Controller" The beneath "Sony 16bit ATA Card for Windows XP" but it has a yellow exclamation mark next to it. When I click on the exclamation mark it gives me a code 10??? Any help? Thanks Steve |

Kindly get the Properties of that device (right click and select properties). Also click on DETAILS tab and get Device Instance ID. Thanks

Re: Sony Vaio CD Drive Not Recognised
Hi Again
Forgot to mention that it's my partner's laptop and it's in GERMAN!!!! Navigating around it is not so easy as I don't speak the language as such but practicing ![]() ![]() I right clicked to properties and a window popped up. It has 3 tabs -- all in German apart from the last one which is the details tab and below is what i found in the details tab: ROOT\SCSIADAPTER\0000 I couldn't find much else on the first tab apart from Sony 16 Bit Ata....and the details such as RAID Controller. Can you let me know what you think is at fault, would just be interesting? If I can help in any other way let me know Thanks for your help Steve |

Re: Sony Vaio CD Drive Not Recognised
I may be wrong but it seems Windows has recognized the drive.
By the way if you see CODE 10, you need to reinstall the drivers. To do that you have uninstall the ones currently installed. Reboot. Click on Cancel if Windows will try to add the device automatically. Install the drivers from the link I posted before. Reboot again. Or you can refer to this one: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310123 If symptoms persist then you may have some incompatibility problems with XP. The drive I believe is circa Windows 98 although the link I gave you before should be drivers for XP. EDIT: The link I gave you was specific for Vaio models only. I doubt if it will work with Compaq. I suggest you call Sony as what we are seeing here is a device that does support XP or should I say that is not designed to run in XP. EDIT2: Also try the W2K driver here: http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu...51A&SelectOS=7
