Blank Display on Dell D820 Laptop

I am having problems with a Dell D820 Laptop(LT) - Vista Hm. Prem. SP1, 4GB RAM.

Last December I suddenly had a very pixelated laptop screen, connected external monitor which was all okay. After a number of hours of diagnostics and searches on line was pointed to a possible invertor problem or loose connection in LT screen. Stripped the screen down (very well built box) and found all okay, rebuilt LT screen and when LT turned on all was ok. Breathed a sigh of relief and moved on to doing some work.

End of last week, LT screen started to flicker to pixelated screen and after a short while, message told me that display driver had restarted. Looked into PC logs, diags but did not find anything to investigate. Carried on using LT, how ever looked at Microsoft update and found that there was an display update available, so after making a system restore point and registry backup, downloaded and installed with no apparent errors. rebooted LT and all all okay. Carried on using then shut-down LT at end of day .

Sunday turned LT on, it appeared to boot - leds flashed, but ended up with totally blank screen only showing cursor/pointer, this is also all that can be seen on external monitor - there is no Log in screen!!!! After a while the screen saver cuts in which can be seen on both screens, when moving the mouse al that is seen in the cursor pointer!!

Turned off the LT and restarted, went into hardware diag (FN_Power) no erros reported. Went into bios setup all okay, it seems. Went into F12, Safe mode boot, LT boots but to black screen with cursor/pointer, which I can dim using the FN+Arrow buttons).

Was told that FN+F4 might hep recycle video, but no luck. Searched the web for further suggestions but noe seem to solve this issue. Slowly thinking I have a Mother board issue?

Completely out of ideas!!! Any suggestions most welcome.

Mike

Understand that, but if I have a black screen how can I install a display driver?

In BIOS menu, LCD screen is OK? If it happens even in BIOS setup menu then it could be the LCD.

Re: Blank Display on Dell D820 Laptop

I had exactly same problem. Solved by going into VGA mode (F8 on startup) and uninstalling then reinstalling latest display driver. Updating didn't work.

Suprised Re: Blank Display on Dell D820 Laptop

Update on the thread. Seems that I suffered an NVIDIA chip failure as eventually the screen went completely blank with only the main led light lit!!

Check out this thread for background info - NVIDIA CHIP FALIURE- anyway have sent the laptop off for repairs at a small place in London.

I'll report back on what happens with the repair.
