Boot up with the recovery DVD and select hardware diagnostics.

The forementioned will not fix the issue. He thinks it could be a failed part, like the hard drive. Definitely a good idea. Also make sure there are no storage devices connected to the notebook, ie: flash sticks, memory cards, external hard drives, etc. They can cause that error.

One thing I like doing is load to the boot menu (ESC) on boot and then select your hard drive. This will ensure the pc IS trying to boot from the hard drive, not a usb device or anything else that may interfere.

Very good point.

I wonder what the "hard drive" other than c: is that is is asking to boot up from.

Thanks I B Rex.

Most OEm companies have a partition built in to the hard drive known as recovery D:. When he puts in a recovery cd or dvd the disk will ask him if he wants to recover from the cd or hard drive. I always recommend recovering from the hard drive because if the cds are format the hard drive and part way through you get errors than you have no backup option to install windows.

I am pretty sure his wording is incorrect. You cant load windows from the C:\ cuz that is where windows is going to install. He must mean what I said.
