sound coming from laptop exhaust

yes there is a sound coming from the left side of my laptop which is from the exhaust.. everything is working fine but the sound is just annoying and it caME OUT OF nowhere... i just urned it on one time n then sound came from it... i have a gateway laptop with vista... is this a hardware problem that will lead to my laptop breaking down or is it fixable in a cheap way...
please help!!!

Does the sound coincide with the spinning of the fan? May be cleaning out the vents/heatsink/exhaust areas may help. Use a can of compressed air to blow out the dust that may have accumulated.
