Asus screen does not light up.

My wife bought a new wide screen Asus laptop last December and now the screen does not light up, it is just possible to see what is on the screen but impossible to do anything with the computer. She bought it at a supermarket called Morisons and they are being very unhelpful saying things like its not their responsability see the makers and the they are saying take it back to where it was bought and ring help lines at a £1.50 a minute. What they don't know is she is a solicitor who deals a lot in this type of problem but in the meantime I thought I would ask if anyone may have an idea what the problem could be.

check the screen has not been dimmed

if not it is probsably the b/light/inverter
make a warranty claim
