EEK! laptop wont boot

hey, can anyone help, my computer appears absolutely stuffed.

it is a dell xps m1330. no new software knowingly recently installed. one day it just suddenly wont start. when i turn it on it instantly display weird lines and patterns and then usually does nothing. occasionally it will let me get into the boot menu but it wont start even from safe mode. on other very occasional times it goes to the blue screen error message and lists something like 00000073 and then a load of stuff about starting a dump.

is there anyway to get into the system and sort this out. i think it must be software as when it does diaply the dell sign and once or twice has got as far as the windows vista screen everything displays normally. maybe it is a registry or virus problem or something. the bios diagnostics runs without problem.

is there anyway of solving this without just wiping and losing all my files?

help would be very very gratefully received!

thanks
