STrange mouse/touchpad problem...HELP!

Well, I need some help, I've been having a problem that I've never seen on a desktop or laptop in my years being around computers. Recently, it has been extremely difficult to click on anything with my mouse; I have a usb mouse connected to my computer; when clicking on something on a new window or different section of an interface (popup, going from address bar to web page on a browser, going between windows), I have to tap the mouse on the table to get it to recognize what it is clicking on. When the mouse is unplugged, however, the same problem exists, so it's not a problem with the usb mouse. On the touchpad, however, I can't tap it on the table, so i have to alt-tab to get another window to the front, then I can click on the window behind that, otherwise it won't work. The problem is very difficult to describe, if you need clarification, just ask. I just simply don't know what this would be a problem with...it can't be the touchpad drivers, or the usb mouse's drivers...i don't know what else to check.....HELP! I'm about to chuck my laptop out of a window!!

Very strange. Honestly I have not seen a similar case.

This is a long shot but I hope you are going to try it. We need to know if it is Windows causing it or not. That being said, it would be good if you can try a linux live CD (like Ubuntu or Knoppix). No need to install as you can run it off the CD/DVD drive. The good thing about this is, if you are wired to the network/internet, you can open a browser in linux and simulate your situation of having several windows open. Try with touchpad and also with the mouse. If it acts up just like in Windows, then it could possibly be hardware.
