HP ze5300

uh oh! So I got a free laptop. It's a dinosaur and it's a rock. Anyway, I was going to use it in my truck for some simple data entry. Easy enough, right? I think it has some major issues. When I turn it on, it does nothing. The fans start like it wants to boot, but I get no display. I plugged in an external CRT, nothing. Could the mb be bad, or am I overlooking something? Here's another sign, every single led on it lights up. num lock caps lock scroll lock all the little shortcut buttons on the top of the keyboard, the whole nine yards. Should I look into this further, or is it probably a lost cause? If it's a lost cause, I got a HP ze5300 for sale for parts!!

Re: HP ze5300

Hi,

When you power ON, you hear the fan spin? How about the HDD and the CD drive.. do you hear them like starting up?

Try without the battery and run with just the AC adapter. If symptom persist remove the RAM modules. Also remove the battery and unplug the ac adapter. Press and hold the power ON button for 30secs. Put back the RAM modules. Put back the battery and plug back the ac adapter. Power ON as normal.

Post back what happens.

Re: HP ze5300

I'll try holding the button on. The fans all spin, I dont have a hdd but the cd tray blinks for a few seconds. I also pulled the RAM out and replaced with known working. There is a reset button on the bottom, which I pressed for 30 seconds or so. Will attempt and report.

Re: HP ze5300

Nada. Something is telling me it's a mb issue, is that possible? Here is exactly what it does. It does the same thing with just ac, just battery, and both. When you insert the ac jack, it indicates charging. When you press the on/off button, all fans run fast, then slow down. I get absolutely no video or backlight, and my crt doesn't recognize a signal. Every possible light comes on, even the volume mute light. Keys seem clean, I removed the grill under the screen and I don't see any evidence of moisture. It does not have a hdd in it, but it should still POST right? maybe laptops are different than desktops in that regard?

Although I doubt if this would work, place a bootable CD in the CD drive just to see if it will boot from there.

-- you mean the bootable CD, right? (Please do not say the motherboard... ). Yes you can use a bootable CD from a desktop.

Re: HP ze5300

I do have a nice rubber mallet, do you think I can try and jam it in there if I don't hit the corners too hard? Yes, I meant the boot cd :)

Re: HP ze5300

Well, I put the boot disk in there from an xp pro desktop pc, and it worked! Just kidding, it's still dead in the water. Would it be worth doing a mobo swap on this thing? It's only a single core p4, but I don't think I can buy one for 150$... Anybody selling a laptop with xp on it?

Re: HP ze5300

I think there are a lot in eBay (I saw one for $139 with free shipping)...

Also I saw this http://www.getpartsonline.com/355478-001.html

EDIT:
But this one is cheaper (also guaranteed to work).

Re: HP ze5300

Would you think that's worth the trouble though? I will also be needing to buy a hdd, and a dc adapter. Anybody have a good set of *specific* instructions on how to do this?

Re: HP ze5300

If you ask me... I say NO GO. You will be spending like $200 plus the work you put in.... add $200 more and you have a new one.

Re: HP ze5300

I found someone who will do it for around 150ish, do you think I could get one with those specs (p4 2.8ghz, 512mb, blah blah) for that? It is in pretty good shape...

Re: HP ze5300

This looks like the cheapest full sizer on tigerdirect ( http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...59654&CatId=17 )

Has comparable speeds to the rock, but it's 50 dollars more than I can fix this one for. Mine has a dvd burner and a 2.8ghz p4. What to do, what to do.

Still think I should head that way? (I'm laptop supernoob)

Re: HP ze5300

I will go with Pentium M.. as for the CD/DVD drive, may be the old one can fit into the new laptop... usually they are of the same shape. Only the connection and tray cover differs.
