Compaq V6101US fresh XP install
First of all thank you to everyone here esp the mods. Everyone here gets rewarded for helping everyone else one way or another, thanks for the support.
I have read the Vista to XP downgrade and noticed that it was mostly a driver thread. I plan to reinstall fresh XP to my laptop. (because I bought it used) Good thing is that XP setup detects my harddrive and its partitions. I have read somewhere (if not here) that I might be able to scoop the drivers from the compaq partition or elsewhere before I delete everything. I want to make sure I have everything I need after the install before I delete everything :) Im a "make sure/be on the safe side" person. Here is a link to the drivers I might need after the install. Do you guys think I might need some other drivers that are not listed? http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=228&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&product=3262036 Thanks! Re: Compaq V6101US fresh XP install
If everything inside is still original (never been replaced) then I believe the drivers on the link would work.
Also if the HDD is original (one that came with laptop out of the box), it may have a recovery partition. Try the steps here (scroll to the HP/COMPAQ procedures): Laptop Recovery Instructions

Re: Compaq V6101US fresh XP install
I cant believe I missed that thread. Nice thread too. Quick question tho, would it be better to do a laptop recovery using the OEM partition or just wipe the HDD clean and do it the old fashioned way?

Re: Compaq V6101US fresh XP install
Very good question...
IMHO doing it old school is always better. Less bloatware that comes with the preinstalled operating system. So formatting HDD including the recovery partition. The downside is you have to download the drivers from HP website. Now if you want (in the future) to restore it back to factory, you can order the CD Recovery Discs (see same page on the link above).

Re: Compaq V6101US fresh XP install
Thanks for your input. I like a fresh wipe myself mainly because of less installed stuff plus some free HDD space. Thanks! This will be my 3rd home in the internetworld. I post in 2 other forums that are more on the car world. Ill try my best to put some input in other threads to help out.
