Why do SONY notebooks have multiple model numbers?

I'm trying to find parts and service manuals and on the screen it says vgn-nr120e but on the bottom case it says pcg-7z2l.

What does it mean?

Check with SONY website http://esupport.sony.com/perl/select-system.pl and you will know that they seem to be one and the same.

Yes, but WHY?!?!?

I have to do twice as much Googling and twice as much eBaying.

Re: Why do SONY notebooks have multiple model numbers?

Why? ...Sorry but asking that question is just like asking why this forum is named techsupportforum.com. . I think Sony can best answer your question.

My two cents only... may be one is the generic part number (PCG7z2l) for a series of models (VGN-Nxxxx). So if you want specifics go with the VGN-Nxxxx.
