Tosh sat 100 low disk space.

My laptop has a 100gb hard disk and over the past 2 years the available space has gradually declined to 25gb. I have checked my main folders for music and photos and it appears they only add up to about 10gb. So adding another 20gb for the O/S and other S/W, where has all my space gone?

Re: Tosh sat 100 low disk space.

I don't know how it is with vista, but xp's system restore can take up a pile of space.

Re: Tosh sat 100 low disk space.

did your hard drive come as one partition? which is very odd for tosh.
They are usually partitioned as two drives.

I seem to remember a great little utility I once had called treesize. It
was just a small program I downloaded but it showed which folders had
the most data in them making your inspector job much easier.

In windows explorer, make sure you go to tools/folder options
click the view tab and select show hidden files and folders.

As a last issue, you dont say which XP you are using but in windows
explorer, under documents-settings then your user name, there is a folder
called local settings. In this is a temp folder which ends up with thousands of
files in it every week on my puter. You can delete everything in this because
they are not really required.

Thanks for the tips but the o/s is Vista, as mentioned under my screen name. Is this applicable to Vista?

Try one of these free programs to see what's taking up your hard drive space:
TreeSize: http://www.jam-software.com/freeware/index.shtml
SequoiaView: http://w3.win.tue.nl/nl/onderzoek/on.../sequoiaview//
WinDirStat: http://windirstat.info/

Thanks for that. Now the $64k question - which is best? I'm very un-techy and at first glance I would think TreeSize looks to be the simplest to install and use. What do you suggest? Oh, and are there any contamination issues with these publishers?

Re: Tosh sat 100 low disk space.

I like Sequoia View - but that's just because I've been using it a lot recently.
They are all reliable software makers.

Re: Tosh sat 100 low disk space.

OK guys well I tried 'Tree size' and although I haven't totally worked out how and what to do with the data, it seems like a big chunk (abt 19gb) is used as 'app data' for my user account. How do I work out what is safe to delete?

Here's a clickable screenshot:

Re: Tosh sat 100 low disk space.

in windows explorer go into tools folder options view and select show hidden files/folders
Now go into your account in windows explorer, then into local setting and then into
temp. Delete everything in there. Also included in your account folder is the my documents and you may have a lot of rubbish in there.
Just another thing, make sure the recycle bin is empty. When you delete stuff it still uses the space unless removed from there

The highlighted section (local setting, temp) doesn't seem to exist in my account folder. Is this a difference with Vista?

(I have selected 'show hidden files/folders' but nothing new appears).
