HP dv2000 Issues involving HDD
Greetings all, normally I am not one to ask for help however I am thoroughly stumped. My friend asked that I help fix her laptop to which I said sure. I fixed one problem (Fixed the dim light problem with the monitor) however it said OS not found so I did my usual run of the muck things (Making sure everything is plugged in etc etc). The MB is not recognizing the SATA HD.
Thats the short of it. Ultimately I tried plugging a USB device in to install drivers and that did not help any, Vista installation disc was of no use. Everything looks fine, I pulled the HDD out and put it in another laptop and it was recognized fine. So the HDD did not just fail. I have heard people tell me its a IDE connector on the MB probably and im up a creek without a paddle. I also have been told to simply swap the bios from IDE to SATA, the problem is that there is no such option I can see in the BIOS information. This is the first time I have ever been stumped, then again to be honest this is the first time I ever really worked on a laptop. Any help is greatly appreciated. I was going to pitch in the towel, but my friend she seemed really bummed so I decided to try a forum. Thanks in advance. PS. Exact model is dv2130us PPS. HP "tech" support is god awful terrible. |

Re: HP dv2000 Issues involving HDD
If you use like Gparted or Vista install CD or XP install CD or linux live CD they have the capacity to see/recognize your drive. In your post you said the MB does not recognize the HDD.... that makes me wonder how you reached that conclusion (the BIOS perhaps)?
Laptops unlike desktops do not have that much use of cables. Given that, the HDD is plugged in almost directly to the motherboard. AFAIK common reasons for it not to be recognized by the motherboard... like if it's defective/dead, or if the pins are bent/broken off, or the mobo connector has come loose, or the motherboard is dead... the last two being the most unlikely to happen. I suggest you put it back in and run HDD diagnostics via the CD drive. You may have to change boot order to make the CD/DVD drive the first one on the list. You can get the diagnostic tools (depending on brand HDD from the HDD Diags link on my sig.). Post back how it goes.
