hp pavilion dv2315nr doesn't display screen or boot

Hi all,

I'm working on an hp pavilion dv2315nr that has me a little confused. When I start up the computer the lights on it light up, I can hear the fan faintly going, and I can open the cd drive, but the screen stays black. I tried plugging it in to an external monitor and nothing happened. Do you guys think the motherboard is fried and its pretty much a lost cause or is it something else?

video chip would be the first suspect when you get nothing on an external monitor

Are you sending output to the external monitor by hitting the right combination of keys (Fn+F4, Fn+F8 or whatever)?
