DVD drive would not open

Hi, I was hoping that someone could help me with a cd/dvd problem. I have a hp 8305us laptop and all of a sudden I started to have some problems with the drive. The installed drive is hl dt st DVD ram gsa 4084n. I checked in the control panel section and the drives seem fine, so I feel that it may be a hardware problem since the door to the bay needs to be touched to open. I am resigned to getting another drive but would like your input on a model that would fit and at the same time offer an upgrade. CIAO

Kindly elaborate on what you mean by this (see quote above)?

Also, go into My Computer, locate the CD/DVD drive icon, right-click and choose Eject. Observe if CD/DVD tray would eject.

Re: DVD drive would not open

Thank you for responding so quickly.

The door is picky and some times it opens and other times I have to use a clip or kind of touch the door as it processes. The drive will some times read a store cd (music) and other times not. It seems to have the hardest time with new media either cd or DVDs. I want to free up some disc space and that is why I wanted to burn some cd/DVDs. I have sonic (came with the computer) installed as well as cdburnerxp which I installed.

I am using decent media which caused no problems before.
My question is any recommendations to a newer model DVD player which I could install on the 8305us machine.

Re: DVD drive would not open

Since this is a laptop your choices would be limited on the size, shape of the drive and its tray cover. Given this, I suggest you take the part number and use that as search argument in Google or eBay. You can also your laptop's model number. A quick search gave me this:
